La vitamina B12, también conocida como cobalamina, es una vitamina esencial soluble en agua tilizada como un cofactor enzimático. En los vasos sanguíneos, la vitamina B12 es impulsada por las proteínas transportadoras inactivas (haptocorrina), activas (transcobalamina II) y del factor intrínseco (IF), que median la absorción intestinal de la B12. La afección más grave asociada con la deficiencia de vitamina B12 es la anemia megaloblástica, que provoca una reducción de la síntesis de ADN en la producción de glóbulos rojos.
